Surgery Information

Animal and Bird VMC understands you may be concerned about your pet's surgery. Our veterinarians and staff are here to answer any questions you may have about your pet. Each and every surgical procedure we perform uses the highest standards of care.

Before Your Pet's Surgery

Blood work is highly recommended for all Pets before any surgical procedure. This will help our veterinarians determine if your pet is healthy enough for the operation. The blood work will check for liver function and your pet's ability to process anesthesia.
If your pet is scheduled for a surgical procedure please do not feed him/her after 10:00 p.m. the night before.

If your pet is scheduled for a surigical or an anesthetic procedure tell us if your pet has accidentally had food after 10 pm the night before. We would rather re-schedule your appointment than have your pet endangered by being anesthetized or sedated with a full stomach.

You will be given a time to admit your pet to the hospital. It's important you arrive on time. All blood work must be completed early so your pet's procedure can be completed and they can recover in time to go home that evening. If you have any concerns, you may set an appointment to discuss the procedure with the veterinarian. In either case, please expect to sign a Pre-Anesthetic Blood Work and Surgery Release Form.

After Your Pet's Surgery

After your pet's surgical procedure, a technician will care for and monitor your pet's progress during the recovery period. A veterinarian or technician will notify you when your pet's procedure is complete and will recommend a convenient time for you to return to the hospital to pick up your pet.

When your pet is discharged, a veterinary technician will go over all medication and discharge instructions carefully with you to ensure your pet can recover at home. Please do not hesitate to ask us if you have any questions at the time of the discharge and feel free to call us any time to address any specific concerns you may have about medication or the post-surgical home care instructions. We want to ensure your pet makes a full recovery so please attend any follow-up appointments your pets veterinarian recommends.
